Auroras Iceland, Fáskrúðsfjörður
In October 2013, Viðar Jónsson a local teacher and football coach, came up with an idea of how to utilize the many possibilities that are present in Fáskrúðsfjörður for enjoying the beauty of the Northern Lights. He introduced his ideas to Jónína G. Óskarsdóttir, the local nurse, and Jóhanna K. Hauksdóttir, a fellow teacher, but they have for many years photographed the Northern Lights, with emphasis on Fáskrúðsfjörður. They liked his ideas and the three of them founded an amateur group, JVJ Northern Lights, in order to realize the ideas. Since then, the project has evolved and changed quite a lot. Two years later, Ingimar Guðmundsson business consultant, joined the group and shortly thereafter, the company Auroras Iceland was founded.
The company aims to offer leisure activities centered around the Northern Lights by:
- Putting on Northern Lights displays and exhibitions
- Northern Lights tours
- Nature trips
Two local companies, Loðnuvinnslan (a fishing company) and KFFB (the Fáskrúðsfjörður Co-op) have generously supported the venture and have among other things provided housing and other support.
The photographers Jóhanna Kristín Hauksdóttir and Jónína Guðrún Óskarsdóttir were born and raised in Fáskrúðsfjörður in the loving arms of their families and the mountains. They grew up playing and working between the mountains and the seashore. In 1976 they got their first cameras, then 12 and 13 years old. Those first cameras kindled within them an interest in photography. That interest has had to give way, through certain periods, to education, work and child upbringing, but between them they have given to the world seven well made individuals. When Jóhanna and Jónína acquired better cameras they started to learn everything there was to learn about those cameras, so that they would be able to produce better photographs. Being totally self-educated in photography they proved that with enthusiasm, will and determination you can go far.
Jóhanna is a teacher and her main areas of photography are studio shots and portraits. She captures moments in people’s lives and brings them memories. Jónína is a nurse and she specialises in bird and wildlife photography. She captures moments in nature which are hard to spot without a lens and thereby enables others to share the wonder. They share the enthusiasm for landscape photography and capturing the awesome Northern lights, or Aurora borealis. In 2008 they really got into taking photographs of Northern lights. The knowledge required to capture the ever “dancing” lights they have gotten by staying up late outside while others sleep in their warm beds. At times the drive has been so strong that the photographers, standing with their cameras shooting wildly, haven’t noticed that the cold surrounding their legs comes from standingin the night frost in their pyjamas.
In Fáskrúðsfjörður, where the mountain ranges give shelter to inhabitants and guests, beautiful Northern lights dancing across the sky are a common sight. They have been there through the millennium. When Jóhanna and Jónína were little girls lying in the snow, they looked mesmerised into the sky at the Northern lights. Their photographs gives everyone a chance to share that feeling with them.
